About the Author
As a young child, Cat Winchester adored reading, spending many happy hours with her Storyteller series. But as she grew up, her love of books diminished. Faced with selections like the Famous Five or the Railway Children, and combined with dyslexia, which went undiagnosed, Cat’s interest in reading languished.

In her early teens however, she discovered science fiction literature, staying up until 2:00 a.m. to finish reading her first science fiction novel. This re-ignited her love affair with reading, and Cat quickly recognised that she no longer needed to be trapped in the children’s section and she graduated to adult literature.

When she finally found an English teacher who was concerned just as much about literary content as she was about grammar and spelling, Cat’s love expanded to include writing. She composed many stories in notebooks but due to rather poor handwriting, most of these stories stayed confined to notebooks. When she was fifteen, Cat discovered computers, and she has never looked back. She wrote her first novel on the school computers and is tickled when she thinks of her teachers stumbling across that amateurish, premier effort.

When asked why she adores reading and writing so much, Cat’s answer is simple, “There have been some very dark and lonely times in my life and during those times reading was my lifeline. It allowed me to step out of my own head and into someone else’s world; somewhere I could forget my own problems, if only for a little while. When I discovered writing it was the same thing, except I could control the world I was in and manipulate it to my own desires.”

Writers' HousesFounded in July 2010 by writer A. N. Devers, Perfect Vision Award recipient Writers’ Houses is a daily blog and database website devoted to the art of literary pilgrimage.

The urge to create a website dedicated to documenting canonical author’s houses came from a growing fascination, since childhood, with books, travel, and seeking connections between a writer’s work and birth place. It also came from the discovery that there wasn’t a comprehensive resource online, or in print, that helped literary pilgrims find their way on such a journey.

Naturally, it is simple these days, to search online for a favorite writer and learn if they have a house to visit. But sometimes there are multiple websites of interest, and not all authors have websites. The Writers’ Houses database is intended to be a field guide to deceased writers’ homes, searchable by author, city, state and country.

Writers’ Houses endeavors, ultimately, to document all writers’ houses open to the public in the world. This is no small undertaking and cannot be accomplished overnight or without help. There exist apparently 290 writers’ houses in France alone. Accordingly, the website is looking for experienced editors and writers to contribute to the blog and database. If you are interested, please feel free to get in touch, but note that Writers’ Houses, being a labor of love, cannot offer compensation beyond the satisfaction of having your work in its virtual pages.

Perfect Vision Award winner, Writers’ Houses is designed and managed by Té Baybute of Do Right By.

Charles Dickens Birthplace Portsmouth, EnglandOn a personal note, one of my favorite writers’ houses (although not yet in the Writers’ Houses field guide) is that of Charles Dickens. This celebrated author was born in an unpretentious house in Portsmouth, England in 1812. Miraculously, the house has survived and is now preserved as a museum decorated in the manner of 1809, which is when John and Elizabeth Dickens first took up residence there at the beginning of their marriage.

They had no inkling that their eldest son would go on to become one of the most internationally renowned writers admired across the world for his novels and short stories. John Dickens traveled to Portsmouth when his job in the Navy Pay Office was relocated from London. They lived in Portsmouth until 1815 when his job required that he return to London. Charles Dickens only resided in Portsmouth for the first three years of his life but he revisited the city on three occasions. The first time he returned to research background information for his novel “Nicholas Nickleby”. Later in life he returned on two occasions when he was a famous writer to perform public readings of his work. Ironically, on his last visit in 1866 he tried to find his birthplace but was unsuccessful. However today it is so well known that visitors can find it easily!

Peter A. BrandtThe official website of Canadian Author and Actor Peter A. Brandt is our latest Perfect Vision Award recipient.

Writing has always been one of Peter Brandt’s passions, but for many years he was unable to take advantage of any opportunity to fulfill his dream. Finally, in 1996 Peter made the decision to switch careers and become a Technical Writer. He has been writing ever since.

His first novel, The Crown Prince of Canada, was written in seventy-two hours at the Great Canadian Winter Novel Writing Marathon, a fundraiser initiated by his long time friend and fellow Canadian author, Martin Avery.

Peter Brandt’s second book, Malinki the Medic, was written from notes made available by his father, about his father’s experiences as a boy thrust into a Russian POW camp at the tender age of fourteen during the Second World War.

Brandt’s autobiographical book, Canuck GI: The Peculiar Life of a Canadian Soldier, is a first hand account of Peter’s life, beginning as an immature high school student who enters the Canadian Army to become a man and finds himself in a surreal world unlike anything he has ever seen before.

Along with his first love, writing, Brandt enjoys some achievement as an actor as well. His love of travel has found him working in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, returning to North America to act in the occasional film and writing novels in his spare time.

“The fun of living in the Middle East is the opportunity it provides to our five kids to visit another part of the world.”

Peter also uses his expertise in writing technical documentation by developing Simple Simon’s Guides. These guides take highly technical computer programming information and present it in a simple yet effective manner, with just the right amount of written procedure and images. In this information age, Simple Simon’s Guides provide the reader with just what they need to know to efficiently utilize a specific program.
