Haggis VitaeDarkly appealing images, mysterious music, and beguiling special effects were incorporated with the free website builder to create this delightfully unique artist website. Enter at your own risk!

This imaginative illustrator and digital artist employed the free website builder to craft an expertly customized portfolio, where she presents her dark, gothic style and love of the strange. Vintage-style illustrations and graphic design are showcased in automated slideshows with thumbnail galleries, set against a black background. Customized typography was uploaded for on-page titles and a golden shade was selected for the website’s text, to complement the vintage theme.

Each page of Miller’s portfolio has its own playlist positioned on the lower right corner. This element was added with a music player widget from the free website builder, and allows Miller to set a customized ambience for each page of her artwork. Flashes of lightning, vintage-film effects and eerie streams of smoke were added with the Flash tools in the free website builder. These subtle yet dynamic features add a touch of whimsy to the website, integrating the artist’s persona into the web design itself.

Artist Bio
My work reflects my love of all things creepy, strange, nonsensical, surreal, silly, dark, gothic, and most definitely vintage.

I like my work (especially the paintings and photoshopped pieces) to appear as if they were found in the dusty attic of some forgotten insane asylum or home for wayward netherworld creatures. Pieces reflect that place where darkness, humor and mystery collide. Where science cozies up to art. Where everyday objects have an ominous presence. Where dead bugs are beautiful.

Influences: Nick Bantock, William Blake, Bosch, Tim Burton, Charles Dickens, Terry Gilliam, EDWARD GOREY, Barbara Hodgson, Dave McKean, Jan Svankmeyer, Edgar Allen Poe, Monty Python, Brothers Quay, Rogier van der Weyden, Jan van Eyck, Vermeer, and the little monkey dancing around in my head.

Graduate of Tyler School of Art, Temple University and in my second incarnation, Thomas Jefferson University. I look through a microscope by day and create things by night.

The website’s design and format is minimalist, creating a refined look and accessible layout. The images are collected into galleries arranged by subject matter. The Ronnie Rabena Photography website begins with a striking splash page that places dramatic emphasis on imagery at the forefront. It rouses anticipation and lets us, the visitor, know what we can expect from the rest of the website.

Once you enter the website you appreciate that the dramatic expectations were not fanciful. The first gallery presents impressive images of cars, using a thumbnail gallery and a distinctive black and orange colour scheme.

Rabena formats the website to include lots of text describing himself and his work, but he distributes it throughout the website which includes a variety of different pages and galleries. He takes full advantage of the thumbnail gallery navigation which enhances the visual force of the website and leaves the emphasis on the visual expression, despite the presence of textual content throughout.

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1981. Ronnie Rabena has had an eye for art and design since he was very young. In 1988, Ronnie’s family made the move to Red Deer, Alberta where he currently resides.

Using a variety of mediums such as pencils, charcoal, pastels, oil paints, and more, Ronnie is able to replicate the intricate details of nature. He took art classes throughout all of his school years and enjoyed them thoroughly.

As DSLR Cameras have become more affordable in the recent years, Ronnie made a decision to purchase his very first DSLR Camera. His self-motivation, determination and willingness to learn prompted him to buy his equipment instead of going to school.

Ronnie spent a couple of years trying to figure out the capabilities of his photographic device and trying to fine tune his digital imaging skills. Combining his natural artistic skills with a newfound skill, Ronnie has taken his photography and art to a whole new level. He is now ready to forge his own path into this exciting world of photography.
